Orientation class at Yonsei University

Orientation class at Yonsei University

Finally my Language Course at Yonsei University started! Today was just the orientation class with all students together at the KLI auditorium (Rm #121), where the principal introduced the University to the students. As you can see on the pictures, the auditorium was packed! Whew!

Of course lots and lots of Chinese and Japanese students but also lots of westerners trying to learn this difficult language. Honestly, i was surprised a little bit and i didn’t expect that people wouldnt even get a seat in the KLI auditorium. I have no idea how they managed to put just 12 students in each class but that is great because you can study better in small groups!

Anyway, i am totally excited and looking forward to my first morning class tomorrow! Yay! 🙂

The Frypan – Fried chicken and beer

The Frypan menu

If you like fried chicken, chips and beer and you are in South Korea, forget Kentucky Fried Chicken and give “The Frypan” a shot! You won’t be disappointed! The Frypan started as a University project and turned into a pretty successful franchise which you can find all over Seoul. After a busy day i was really in the mood for some chicken and beer, so i went to Yangjae-dong to pick up Sujin and we went to the Frypan together.

The Frypan salad

Usually i am the kind of guy who leaves the salad untouched but this salad was really, really good and tasted great! I was wondering a lil bit that they didn’t offer the salad as a stand alone menu, only as a side dish next to the chicken. So pick up the set menu to get also this delicious salad!

But let’s forget the salad now and focus why we are really here for: freshly fried potato chips toppped with boneless fried chicken! Yay! That’s what i call a menu and believe me you need some good appetite to finish this! 😉 The chicken is crispy and tastes great, especially with the garlic sauce! The spicy sauce is also really good but i like it more as a dip for the potato chips.

Mika says: Great place if you want to eat some fried chicken. I’ve been to KFC here already and believe me, you will do yourself a favor if you check out the “The Frypan”. We paid less than 30.000 Won for the menu and the beer, so around 20 Euro. Not cheap but a reasonable price for a tasty chicken, chips and a great salad.

맥주 Maekju

If you are in the mood to drink more beer like us yesterday, keep your eyes open for this magical word: 맥주 😀 Romanized it’s called “maekju” and means beer! We were really lucky because just across the Frypan was this great beer place, where you can grab the beer by yourself and it was really, really cheap! The perfect place to get drunk! 😛

Cass and Hite

It isn’t the typical drinking place because usually you need to order something to eat too besides drinking. But in this place you could even bring your food along with you, grab a beer and enjoy your evening. Definitely i need to look for such a place in Sinchon too, it would immediately become my second living room! 😀

Packed subway in Seoul

And something you should get used to, if you are going home in the early evening. The “Super-packed-there-is-no-space-for-breathing” subway. It was even hard for me to put out the iPhone to shoot this picture. Priceless experience, especially if somebody close to you farted as well 😛

My flat in Seoul / Sinchon

I am pretty sure some of my friends and also my family are curious how my flat in Seoul looks like. For one thing, yes, i did clean up my place before i took some photos. It doesn’t look that tidy most of the times. For the other thing this doesn’t represent the traditional Korean flat here in Seoul. I am living in Sinchon (신촌동), a place which is known for its nightlife, tons of restaurants and love motels. Also surrounded by many Universities as Yonsei University, Ewha Woman’s University and Hongik University. The ideal place if you are a student here. Unfortunately the cost of living here is extremely high, especially if you are not willing to have a long-term contract and pay an extraordinary amount of deposit. But i will live here just for three months this time, so it’s okay.

On the first picture you can see the entrance door with the bathroom on the left and the kitchen on the right side. The funny thing about this flat is that the washing maschine is below the cooking plate. Strange but there is truly no other place to put it! General a very cosy place although the interior decoration is a lil bit outmoded.

door lock

This is my door lock. No key, just a 6-digit code. Very handy but i don’t know how secure this really is. Also i don’t know what happens if the batterie is dead, so let’s cross finger i don’t need to find out 😀

room view in Sinchon

And finally the view out of my room! If you close the windows you barely hear anything, so it isn’t that loud as you might think.

I hope i could give you a small insight into my flat. As mentioned on the beginning this really doesn’t represent a normal Korean flat. For my next time in Korea i will also check out different areas and possibilities. So if you have any hints and tipps about living in Seoul, please let me know! I would highly appreciate every help to find a good place for a reasonable price! Thx!
