Shabu Shabu 샤브샤브

After eating lots of junks here in Seoul so far ( like 족발, 갈매기살 and fried chicken) it was time to introduce you some heathly food today 🙂 It is called Shabu Shabu ( 샤브샤브 ) which is, of course just in my humble opionion, a great eating experience for everyone from the Western countries. Shabu Shabu has its roots in Japan and is a dish where you cook meat and lots of vegetables in a huge cooking pot. Although i am not the big fan of veggies i deeply love 샤브샤브 !! Eating 샤브샤브 is like getting a three-course meal, for starters cooking the veggies and the meat, then cooking the noodles and enjoying the soup and at the end you are eating a rice dish. Really, really yummy!

At the very beginning you put all the vegetables inside the cooking pot and let it cook for a while. After a few minutes you can already start to grab some meat and put it inside the bowl. It’s tricky at the beginning to keep the meat on the chopstick but with some practise it won’t be a problem. Because the meat is cut into razor-thin slices it is done very quickly. You grab some onions and cabbage and eat it together with the meat.

After finishing the meat and the veggies you are putting some noodles inside the bowl and let it cook again for a while. Thanks to the vegetables and meat the soup gets a great taste and is truly delicious! My favorite part of Shabu Shabu. 맛있어요!

At the end you will get some rice and an egg, which will be mixed with the leftover soup. If you were not full yet, you will be probably now 😛

샤브샤브 definitely counts to my favorite dishes here in South Korea, although it isn’t a original Korean dish. Perhaps one day i will get the chance to taste the real Japanese version of it, this would be great. You can find Shabu Shabu restaurants on every corner here in Seoul, at least here in Sinchon 😀 So give it a try, it is a great eating experience! You won’t be disappointed!

Eating 갈매기살 at 서래

Seorae 서래 in Sinchon

My first two day of my Language Course at Yonsei are done and finally i had some time to go out and eat something delicious again. This time we choosed to go to Seorae ( 서래 ) to eat some delicious 갈매기살 and 껍데기.

It is not so easy to get a table there immediately, especially at night when Sinchon is packed with tons of people! So most of the times you signup on a waiting list and wait until they shout your name. We were lucky, just a few minutes later we got our table and ordered 갈매기살 and 껍데기!

Like most of the times you are preparing the food by yourself. My both lovely ladies took good care of the meat and roasted it well over an open flame. Honestly, i wasn’t that much into the ggeobdegi 껍데기 which is the skin of a pig. It was pretty chewy and kinda sweet. Luckily Sunjin liked it a lot, so she took care of it the most! 😀

Galmaegisal 갈매기살

Otherwise i liked the Galmaegisal ( 갈매기살 ) a lot. You grab a piece of galbisal, put into a sauce with onions and eat it. Soooo delicious!

Makgeolli 막걸리

It was friday night, no work for the girls and no university for me on the next day, so we decided to drink Makgeolli ( 막걸리 ) which fits perfectly together with the 갈매기살! We had really a nice and fun evening so i wanna say a big thank you to Sujin and Sunjin to be my company again!

Mika says: Both thumbs up again! Seorae ( 서래 ) is a great place if you like to eat well and have a good time. But don’t come here if you are in the mood for talking a lot and having deeper conversations because it is really, really loud inside. The meat is truly good, especially the 갈매기살! Very Yummy! The food is also very cheap here, we paid around 27.000 Won, about 17 Euro, for three people. I was even still full on the next day and skipped breakfast ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Mapo gung jung jok bal at Gongdeok Market

Gongdeok Market Subway Line 5 Exit 5

Yesterday Sujin’s sister Sunjin was in the mood for some Gung jung jok bal, so we decided to go there all together. Gung jung jok bal ( 궁중족발 ) is some kind of a ham hock, pretty similar to a “Schweinshaxn” or “Stelze” as we call that kind of dish in Austria. I never tried this so far in Austria (shame on me, i know) but yesterday i had the chance to try the Korean version of it. So we went to Gondeok Station and went straight to the famous 마포 궁중족발!

The place itself wasn’t really packed in the early afternoon, so we hadn’t any problems to get a table there. But don’t expect that kind of peaceful scenery when you come here at night because 궁중족발 one of the favorite dishes when you go out drinking. I remember a different market last year and we went there on the evening to eat some pancakes with Makgeolli ( 막걸리 ). We needed to wait nearly an hour to get a table. But of course the place has its own charme when it is really crowed with tons of people laughing and having a good time.

And here it is, a huge pile of 궁중족발 served together with Soon dae ( 순대 ) and Soon dae goog ( 순대국 ). Of course we ordered some beer and enjoy the very tasty meat. I especially liked the Soon dae soup which will be refilled without any additional cost! After we finished eating we went to explore the Gongdeok Market but i guess we should come back once again when this place is packed at night!

Mika says: Both thumbs up! I enjoyed the Gung jung jok bal a lot and had a nice time there with Sujin and Sunjin. It’s pretty cheap if you consider that 4 people can easily get satisfied with that amount of food. It cost 24 Thousand Won, approximately 16 Euro. Still i would recommend you to go there at night because the atmosphere is way better then!
